A beginner’s field guide to creating a game, making mistakes, and moving forward.
The rise of independent game development has made it easier than ever to make your own video game. The opportunity we have to create completely new experiences is thrilling, but actually sitting down and making a game is a whole different story; games are so much more than lines of code.
Getting There is part field guide, part research notebook. It details an ongoing journey in game creation—where one began, inspiration, lots of pixel art, and perhaps most importantly, the mistakes made and how they were solved. Through glitches, gameplay re-works, character redesigns, and narrative overhauls, Getting There shares it all so that anyone might learn and improve.
