How can artists of the Korean immigrant diaspora create artwork that reflects their heritage? Krafft supports Korean-American artists to overcome challenges such as language barriers and geographic distance. It creates immersive access to authentic cultural resources, fostering a deep connection with shared heritage and overall, enriching the global arts landscape.

Krafft is an immersive mixed-reality virtual experience designed to deepen cultural understanding and appreciation by exploring the workspaces of South Korean artisans. This platform focuses on three critical aspects of the creative process: inspiration, creation, and sharing.

The initial intervention facilitates immersive tours of virtual workspaces, enabling people to select and explore folk crafts through a visual catalog. Artisan profiles, stories, and the histories of their work are brought to life through MR interviews and AR visualizations, supported by real-time translation features to bridge language differences.

A subsequent feature is an MR interactive craft workshop. Here, people learn traditional, step-by-step crafting techniques, surmounting physical and informational barriers with real-time expert guidance and feedback. The final feature, community sharing, allows users to post and view creations via 3D scanning and mixed reality, fostering constructive feedback and discussions about crafting techniques.

Krafft aims to broaden appreciation for artistic diversity and heritage, preserve knowledge of traditional crafts, and overall, promote a more inclusive global art scene. While initially focused on a particular use-case, its potential extends to educational settings, supporting local artisans’ livelihoods, connecting remote consumers with local creators, and documenting traditional craft data.
